FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

For questions about our small group lessons, please see here.
I have been giving individual and small group French tuition, both online and in person, since April 2013. During this time, I have had the privilege of teaching French to a wide range of people. They have varied in:
  • age - from 7 to 77 (literally);
  • group size - from 1 to 4 students;
  • prior knowledge of the language - from absolute beginners to a university student preparing to study at the Sorbonne; and
  • reasons for learning the language - work, school, university, retirement plans, or just sheer pleasure.
I take all of these factors into account when preparing for, and conducting, lessons. For example, an 8-year-old learning as part of a family preparing for a holiday in France requires a different teaching style to an 8-year-old learning on his own. Similarly, a grammatically competent A Level student may just need a bit of confidence-boosting speaking practice to excel in the oral exam; whereas another A Level student who can speak confidently but with a few errors slipping in may benefit from revising grammatical concepts, such as tenses and agreements.
Absolutely not! As mentioned above, I am experienced in teaching those with no experience whatsoever of the language. In fact, I find it especially rewarding to see my students put basic phrases together for the first time, and realise just how similar English and French are - around 40% of words in English are exactly the same in French!
Thanks to the wonders of technology, a sizeable proportion of my tutoring is now done online. More info here.
I am experienced in preparing students for:
  • GCSEs;
  • AS and A Levels; and
  • University degrees (whether French is the major or minor element of the degree).
I can also tutor, on request, those wishing to take either of these French-government approved qualifications:
  • DELF (Diplôme d'Études en Langue Française) - basic French qualification for foreigners; and
  • DALF (Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française) - advanced French qualification for foreigners.
No, there is no minimum term or ongoing commitment here at Fantastique French Tuition. You may stop lessons at any time, and for any reason.
Generally, no. If I have given you homework at the end of the previous session, it's helpful (although not essential) if you've done it, so we can run through it together at the start of the session. Also, if there are any specific topics/points that you'd like to cover in the lesson, then that's what we'll do. However, it is by no means necessary to have a "plan" for each of your lessons, and if not you can simply leave it to me to direct the lessons - I always come prepared with ideas and/or material for us to work on.
I generally do not tutor children under the age of 5. There is no upper age limit.
Subject to other clients, I'm available to tutor any time between 0900 and 2100, 7 days a week (including bank holidays).
No.
As you may expect, I tend to get more requests for tuition as the exams approach (ie, between April and June every year). I will do my best to accommodate any new clients coming to me during this period, including extending my hours of availability. However, please note that if my timetable is full, priority will be given to existing clients.
In certain circumstances, yes. Please see full details here.
Of course. I will bring my latest CRB certificate, Ministry of Justice interpreter's ID, and LLB Law and French degree certificate to our first tutoring session. References from other clients are also available on request.
My preferred means of payment is bank transfer. I request payment from:
  • clients having lessons of less than 2 hours every week: after every 2 lessons;
  • all other clients: after every lesson.
No.
If you cancel a lesson, the following charges will apply depending on the amount of notice given:
  • less than 24 hours: 100% of the lesson fee;
  • 24-72 hours: 50% of the lesson fee;
  • more than 72 hours: no charge. There is also no charge if we can reschedule the lesson during the same week.
Absolutely. I am more than happy to have a free, "no obligation" chat with you to discuss things. This can be over the phone, via Skype or even at your home. Alternatively, you can ask me as many questions as you'd like via email - just fill out my contact form to get the ball rolling.
