COURSE STARTS 9 SEP!
For those wishing to start - or brush up - from the very beginning in French, our Beginners Plus French course in Romsey will take place on Wednesday mornings at Woodley Village Hall. (Map here. There is ample free parking on site.)

Our Beginners Plus French classes are for you if:
- you are an absolute beginner in the language; or
- although you may have studied the language at school many years ago, you would not now feel confident introducing yourself to, and having a basic conversation with, a French-speaker.

Please see below a snapshot of what we will be looking at in our New Year Improvers French course in Romsey, on Wednesday mornings at Woodley Village Hall starting soon. (Map here. There is ample free parking on site.)
This class is designed to bridge the gap between our Beginners Plus and Intermediate (both also in Romsey) courses, but its syllabus is a bit more freeform than those of these other two classes. As a result, there is more flexibility for students to suggest other topics (eg, specific areas of weakness, roleplays or general French conversational practice) that they would like to work on as we progress through the programme.
Most of the topics will be introduced by listening to a typical French conversation. Some of these conversations are available to listen to on the Roleplays page of this site. Just click on the links below to listen to them.

NEW COURSE STARTS 24 SEPTEMBER
Our Intermediate French course takes place in Romsey every Wednesday morning at Woodley Village Hall (map here). There is ample free parking on site.
Our Intermediate classes are for you if most of the following apply:
- you can introduce yourself to, and have a basic conversation with, a French-speaker.
- you are familiar with the three key verbs (
avoir,êtreandaller) in the present tense. - you have some familiarity (even if this is minimal) with how to form basic past and future tenses.
- you're happy translating basic vocabulary such as tree, nephew, to watch and bicycle.
...but might struggle with some or all of the following:
- distinguishing between the imperfect and the passé composé when talking about events in the past.
- using direct and indirect object pronouns: I like them, she's talking to him...etc.
- using more advanced (but nevertheless common) vocabulary such as
réseau,lumière,démarrerandréussir.
You will, towards the end of the intermediate course, be able to start putting reasonably sophisticated sentences together. So we will devote the last two sessions of the course to improving your conversational skills, including:
- expressing your opinion, and your likes and dislikes;
- useful words and phrases to avoid awkward silences and "buy yourself a bit of time" while you're thinking of the rest of your sentence.
Check out the Small group lessons FAQ and the criteria for the Beginners, Improvers, and Advanced French classes (also in Romsey) to help you decide.

VENEZ NOUS REJOINDRE!
Our Advanced French classes take place in Romsey on Wednesday mornings (10:15am-11:15am) at Woodley Village Hall. (Map here. There is ample free parking on site.)
These classes are for you if most of the following apply:
- you can speak fluently (if not perfectly) to a French-speaker about yourself, your family, and your likes and dislikes.
- you can use the present, past and future tenses effectively.
- you have a good working knowledge of direct and indirect object pronouns: I like them, she's talking to him...etc.
- your vocabulary is reasonably extensive and so you know the French for words such as to disappoint, carpet, heritage and manager.
...but might struggle with some or all of the following:
- using more complex tenses such as the pluperfect and the conditional past, even though you may have come across them at some point in the past.
- knowing when, and how, to use the subjunctive, and how to get around it if you don't want to use it.
- knowing where to put pronouns such as
lui, leur, yanden, especially when using tenses other than the present. - understanding an article in a French current affairs magazine such as Le Point.
- following a documentary on a French TV station such as TV5 Monde.
As you can now already speak reasonably fluently, there is more opportunity in our Advanced classes for us to have general conversations. You will notice, therefore, that the formal/grammatical lessons are interspersed with lessons where we have a general, not-too-serious and hopefully enjoyable debate around a particular theme.
The aim of these debates is to build up your confidence in speaking and listening to French and to broaden the vocabulary you use, and they are designed to replicate as far as possible the real-life discussions you could have with French people.
