The reviews below come from students I've taught regularly over long periods (in some cases, many years).

Stimulating

I have studied with Tim in his Ringwood Advanced class for several years.

His classes are well-structured, stimulating and cover a wide range of topics. He teaches professionally yet in a friendly, patient and helpful manner. He has a real gift for adapting his classes as your confidence and skills develop, keeping you challenged.

Unfortunately, I am having to take a break from attending his classes which I will miss, but hope to return in the future. Thank you Tim.

Enjoyable

I was really pleased when Tim started French classes in Romsey and have enjoyed going for the last four years.

He’s a good teacher and the atmosphere in the group was friendly, relaxed and encouraging. We had lots of laughs too! The classes are a good mixture of conversation, learning about French culture and improving grammar and language.

Friendly environment

Learning French with Tim was great!

Lessons are clear and well structured, and Tim supplies brilliant resources to aid students. The classes provide a friendly and encouraging environment in which to learn.

I enjoyed every lesson, got to meet some wonderful people, and feel like I learned a lot.

Very enjoyable

I did O level French at school 45 years ago and had not studied it since, although I was exposed to French speakers at work. When I retired at the end of 2022, I decided to have a go at French conversation classes. I was recommended Tim by a friend. I had group lessons with Tim at Fisherton Mill for two years.

I found Tim an excellent tutor and a really nice guy. My class was great fun, we had a lot of laughs whilst improving our conversation and knowledge of French grammar and language.

I would thoroughly recommend Tim as a tutor and Fisherton Mill as a lovely location to learn in. Go on - give it a go, what have you got to lose!

Invaluable

Tim is a great French tutor. I have thoroughly enjoyed every lesson and feel as though I have learned a great deal. Tim's patient and encouraging style gives students the confidence to 'have a go' - this has been invaluable for me.

I need to take a break for a while due to work commitments, but would love to return to classes when I can. I am going to miss them a lot!

Priceless

As a 60-year-old-man living in Dorset, I decided some 10 years ago, that when I retired (which I was lucky enough to be able to do in 2024), I would retire to the S.W. of France as I love it so much there. However, when I left school in 1981, I did so without ANY foreign language skills or qualifications; naively, I never thought I would need such things back then. I tried both Duolingo and Babbel, but very quickly realised that they were definitely not going to get me to my intended goals, as they were far too basic for my needs.

Honestly I didn’t know where to start, and I began to think this wasn’t ever going to be achievable for me so late in life, but then I found Tim’s site. He was not only located relatively locally to me (which is something I wanted despite knowing that my intended lessons would be online), but just had a good “feel” to the options and choices that were available.

Having bitten the bullet, I discussed my needs with Tim by email and subsequently on the phone, and I decided that I would start my once-a-week, 1-hour Teams lessons with him, centred around my specific needs (GCSE/CEFR requirement, and French conversational skills), and with no strict deadline requirement from either myself or Tim.

Well, what can I say – I was pretty terrified of making a complete fool of myself and had severe doubts I could achieve what I needed, but I needn’t have worried. Tim is a really great chap, very friendly and understanding, very patient (!), utterly reliable (despite having a busy tutoring schedule), doesn’t mind when you make mistakes and, in my case, forgetting things so frequently!  The lessons were structured and didn’t push me into the “deep-end” – I started off with the basics and we built on my increasing ability as the lessons progressed – just the right speed, not staying on the absolute basics for too long, but not flying ahead into the realms of what I would consider (for me!) advanced-level language skills.

Downsides? Absolutely none! Obviously, everyone learns at different speeds and has their own pre-existing commitments, so being able to undertake a foreign language at all, and especially at my pace, was priceless. Ultimately, I believe have now attained a very good basis for what I need to live in France (you can obviously never do too much!), and I would not be in this position if it weren’t for Tim and Fantastic French Tuition.

I honestly and genuinely cannot recommend Fantastic French Tuition enough. Merci beaucoup Tim - c'était instructif et amusant !

Enjoyable

I have always enjoyed Tim’s lessons at Greyfriars Centre in Ringwood each Friday evening. I occasionally visit France for holidays, so getting Tim to improve my spoken French came in extremely useful. All of Tim's lessons were well planned and extremely enjoyable.

Thanks again.

WD40

In spite of having lived and worked in France during the 70’s and 80’s, my French was as rusty as an old bicycle! I desperately needed some practice in fluency in order to lubricate my language skills.

I started having lessons with Tim and was immediately impressed by how well prepared his lessons were, while at the same time allowing for some spontaneity and “real” communication. The stimulating programme of studies he prepared was varied and interesting and it was all presented with Tim’s dry English humour.

I can now say that, thanks to Tim, my French runs much more smoothly and is less corroded than before!

Fantastique!

I hadn't spoken much French since high school. My husband and I moved to France and I needed to improve my French, quickly!

I shared Tim’s weekly Zoom group within which I conquered the embarrassment I often felt in speaking French badly and learned as much through the others’ errors and achievements as my own. Many thanks, Tim, for answering all of my daft questions with humour and grace.

I felt that Tim was impressively adept at correcting my French without deflating my enthusiasm to speak. This went a long way to growing confidence and motivating me to participate irrespective of whether I ‘got it right’.

I also thought the variety of learning was particularly effective. We read current affairs articles, listened to podcasts, watched videos, did grammar exercises and collectively discussed all of it. I learnt much more than just how to speak French.

Thanks again Prof!

A Level grade B

Tim has been tutoring our son Oliver for the last 18 months for A Level French. This was preceded by a difficult move between countries, where our son did not integrate well into his new school and settled for home schooling.

We appreciate Tim’s calm and thorough approach to teaching French online, which has kept our son motivated in his studies. We also value Tim’s last minute support in the complicated preparation of this year’s assessed grades process!

Oliver achieved a B grade in his A level French and managed to get his first choice university place. Tim’s positive and persistent approach played an important role in this. Thank you Tim!

Highly recommended.

GCSE grade 7

I contacted Tim in desperation after becoming very concerned with how my son had fallen well behind in his GCSE French lessons at school, lost confidence, switched off from trying to learn French and was consequently struggling in his lessons.

What a great decision that turned out to be! Tim took my son right back to the beginning, starting with the present tense and then working through the other different tenses, the grammar, vocabulary, conversation etc. all at the right pace for my son. Tim was patient in explaining points when my son did not understand, and helped him significantly improve his French accent.

Within the space of a year, I have watched his confidence grow and instead of failing his French GCSE, he has achieved a grade 7 and was only just short of a grade 8 – a great rescue!   I can definitely say that If our younger son encounters any issues with learning the language, I will be straight on the phone to Tim - sooner rather than later.

Excellent tutor

Tim has been an excellent French tutor for the past four years.  My wife and I have gone from complete novices to capable French readers and speakers.  Tim clearly puts a lot of effort into his preparation and his lessons are very well structured and nicely varied. He puts a strong emphasis on the fundamentals which has really helped us understand the structure of the French language.

I'd thoroughly recommend him for any and all of your French learning needs!

GCSE Grade 9

For two years, Tim taught me the entire GCSE French course, and through my lessons with him I achieved a grade 9 in my exam. Tim's lessons were always varied and interesting, covering many topics. His explanations were simple to understand, and his resources were detailed and always very useful. Most importantly, Tim is a very encouraging tutor who helped me build up my confidence massively in the area I struggled with most - speaking.

I would thoroughly recommend Tim for anyone who wants to learn French, at any level. Not only will you learn a lot, you'll enjoy it too.

A Level help

I had weekly Skype sessions with Tim for my A Level French. The sessions really helped me and Tim kept me focused on French throughout the two years even when I was under pressure with the other three A Levels I was taking. He is enthusiastic, organised and very easy to talk to. I was delighted with my final A Level result and can't thank Tim enough for the help he gave me.

Great lessons

I have really enjoyed going to Tim's lessons in Bournemouth for the last 12 months. They are always well structured, relaxed and fun. They are also informative, not only about French grammar and vocabulary, but also about the culture. I would highly recommend Tim to anyone wanting to learn the language either for exams or for pleasure.

Excellent and high quality tutoring

Tim has not only massively boosted my confidence speaking French, but has improved my grammar and accuracy when studying for my A-levels. He is an encouraging, enthusiastic and an incredibly helpful tutor with well-organised notes and exercises to help with all areas of understanding French.
